Originally, the Doctor and Lothar were going to be camping near a small, Alpine Lake. I started doing research as to which lake, and stumbled upon King Ludwig’s amazing Winter Garden. It was destroyed soon after he died (within a few years), and oh, I would have loved to have seen it.
My father was, is, an enormous fan of the music of Richard Wagner, which is not that common for a Jewish guy. It was his primary passion, and he spent a lot of time organizing and running the San Francisco Wagner Society, in part so that he had somewhere to say, “Hi, I’m Steve, and I’m a Wagnerian.” He told us the plots of Wagner’s operas when we were kids and played the music constantly, and he’ll always be Wotan to my Brunhilde. He died a year ago. I miss him terribly.
